Taking a break

Wow, 10 days off between games. How is the University of Wyoming basketball team going to handle it?

“This week off comes at a good time for us,” Cowboy second-year head coach Heath Schroyer said Monday during the weekly Mountain West Conference teleconference.

Cowgirls — and women’s basketball — keep pace with football

The Mountain West Conference couldn’t have picked a better time to flex its muscles and show the nation that collegiate athletics is alive and well in a regional area viewed by most as a void between the Pac-10 and the other major conferences to the East.

Plenty of work to do ... despite break between games

The Cowboys are off until Jan. 14 when they host San Diego St. at the Arena-Auditorium.

Pokes will use break to refocus

SALT LAKE CITY -- At 11-4 and with 15 regular season games remaining, it's still a bit early for a make-or-break week.

But the next nine days are crucial for the Wyoming Cowboys.

Christensen's arrival brings breath of fresh air to offense

The senior quarterback might finally be comfortable with the offense.

The senior defensive end could actually get to spend some time on the sideline and have more margin for error.

Expanding his skills on Wyoming's court: Interview with Ogirri

Sean Ogirri is cruising with the Cowboys. The Denver East graduate says he has developed into more of a playmaker, rather than just a shooter, in his short time at Wyoming. (Matt Cilley. The Associated Press ) Sean Ogirri earned Mr. Colorado Basketball honors when he led Denver East High School to a 24-0 state championship season in 2004. He appeared on a regional cover of Sports Illustrated after he lifted Wichita State to the 2006 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 as a sophomore. When Shockers coach Mark Turgeon bolted for Texas A&M after Ogirri's junior season, Ogirri decided it was time for a change. Wyoming invested a rare two years of scholarships for one year of eligibility on a rare player.

Ogirri leads the Mountain West Conference (counting all games) with 3.3 made 3-pointers a game, ranks ninth in scoring (14.9) and is shooting 94.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Denver Post staff writer Natalie Meisler caught up with him by phone in Logan, Utah, while the Cowboys spent New Year's week competing in the Duel in the Desert, losing 90-85 to Utah State in overtime in the title game.

Pokes lack of defense frustrates Schroyer

SALT LAKE CITY -- To many people who have been around the Mountain West Conference, Heath Schroyer's name is synonymous with defense.

Schroyer was in charge of a defense at Wyoming in 2002 when the Cowboys made an NCAA Tournament run and led the league in field-goal-percentage defense, defensive rebounding and rebounding margin.

Luke Nevill stands tall against the Cowboys

Utah's Luke Nevill reaches over Wyoming's Dijibril Thiam and Mikhail Linskens for the ball. Nevill scored 29 points against the Cowboys.Something about Wyoming brings out the best in Luke Nevill. Every time the Utah senior faces the Cowboys, he dominates nearly every important statistical category.

Nevill held true to form on Saturday afternoon. The senior from Australia poured in 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting, collected 13 rebounds and blocked five shots to power the Utes' convincing 91-67 rout over Wyoming at the Huntsman Center in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams.

In two losses to the Cowboys a year ago, Nevill averaged 23.5 points and did a solid job of controlling the paint. This time around, he matched a career high in points — set against BYU during his freshman season — and established a new career high in blocks.
